Join us for a celebration of Independence Day at Benjamin Franklin House. Enjoy cake and a glass of bubbly following a 30 minute tour of the world’s only remaining Franklin home. As a founder of the United States, Franklin was the only statesman to have signed all four documents that created a new nation, including The Declaration of Independence, the Treaty of Alliance with France, the Treaty of Paris, and The Constitution. The first of these was signed on 4 July 1776.

Fuelling Democracy: Coffee Houses and Early American Politics

Wednesday 24 July 6:30pm - 8:30pm

Join us for a talk by Caitlin Hoffman, House Front of House and Marketing Manager, on how Benjamin Franklin used the stimulating environment of coffee houses to help shape his early political ideals. These public and social establishments were centres of the 18th century Enlightenment and provided a foundation of early American politics.

Join Polly Hewson, a character from Franklin’s household, on a tour of the building to learn about everyday life in 18th Century London. Inspired by our Virtual Georgian Interior, children will design furnishings to fill the historic rooms.

Family Day: Float Ben’s Boat!

Tuesday 20 August, 10:30am - 12:30pm

Benjamin Franklin crossed the Atlantic Ocean eight times in his life, charted the Gulf Stream, and investigated canals. During his time in London, he swam in the Thames and conducted experiments using the ponds on Clapham Common. Children will recreate some of Franklin’s investigations involving water and design their own boat!
